Hard Light - Shadows

Image
Welcome back everyone!  This post will be about shadows!  To start, I gained inspiration by looking up key words such as “abstract shadow photography” and “hard lighting photography.”  This last month, I took a more observational approach. I would keep an eye out for shadows and take pictures! Occasionally I would stage the shadows, but not very often. I emphasized shadows as a deliberate theme by ONLY taking pictures of shadows. There would rarely be anything distracting the viewer from the shadow.  6 Artificial This image is my favorite! I was in my brothers room and he was messing around with his sword. I noticed the shadows on the wall and then asked him to pose! I turned off the main light and then used his phone as a small light source. This is how I got the distinct harsh shadows on the wall. 1 Object 2 Person 3 Structure 4 Me 5 Natural When taking pictures of shadows, it’s important to move light sources around to experiment with the different shapes the subj...

Hard Light - Creepy

Image
Welcome back guys! During this portion of class we worked on hard lighting and how to use it to make creepy pictures. I worked with Triston. We both had equal roles in the composition, bringing props, and holding the lights. My thoughts for this assignment were more technical. I looked up things like “how to make a blurry subject” for a ghost idea I had. We looked up different ideas and stuck with them! #1 Photo Shadows in the Doorway In order to capture this image, we had to lower the exposure on the camera and increase the amount of time the camera had to gather light. We then asked someone to stand in the doorway so they create almost a silhouette. Creepy Light Painting Sinister Clown A ghostly Shadow I was very proud of my results! I found it very fun to experiment with the settings of the camera. If I could go back in time, I would have given myself more time to take pictures and compose. My concept ideas were good! I was able to create images using hard light and edgy shado...

Creative ISO 2.2

Image
Welcome back everyone! This post is going to be focused on using ISO to craft good images. ISO increases the brightness of your image. Typically, you want to increase ISO when taking pictures in dark lighting. Using a lower ISO can make your images darker and edgier if that’s what you’re going for! With this image, I had a high ISO level. You can see the gritty-ness of the image. This grit can add character to some images, but depending on what you’re going for, it can be distracting. This image had an ISO of 800. This image was taken in an area with difficult lighting to work with. I had to bump up my ISO because the clouds covered the sunlight. My phone camera only allowed me to go up to 800 ISO, so the image might be a little too dark. For this image, I used an ISO of 400. I think it is important to experiment with the digital noise high ISO gives you. Sometimes, it can convey a certain message you’re trying to go for. The grainy-ness of a high-ISO image can not look very good somet...

Camera Control

Image
I have not previously used a camera before this class. I took pictures with my phone, not a camera, so I didn’t understand things like ISO, white balance, or exposure. I knew how to work the flash though! For apps I used Lightroom. It was very helpful because my phone camera couldn’t do many things a normal camera can do. I learned that raising ISO would be most helpful in darker areas. At higher ISO levels, I noticed some digital noise and an exposure change. As you can see, the higher my ISO was, the more overexposed the picture got! For these images I used my phone camera paired with Lightroom. Flashfill does exactly what it sounds like: fills in the shadows! The flash light wraps itself around the subject and brightens up the shadows. Using flashfill is best when you want to capture an image of something moving.  White balance basically adds a color filter over you image. WB is most helpful when taking pictures in lighting that too warm (orange) or too cool (blue). The lighting...

My Photos! 2022-2023 Photography Per.1

Image
Hi, I’m David the photographer! I am a junior at Moanalua High School and I love taking pictures! I am new to photography and am looking forward to experimenting with different techniques to create unique images. I hope you guys will see and enjoy everything I’ll be experimenting with this year! Thank you! Here's some things about me: These are some images that inspire me! I like how the photographer utilizes long-exposure to create pictures that look like paintings. I hope to take more pictures of water and hopefully space. Here are some of my pictures: This is my best photo of 2021-2022! I love how clear and the shade of blue the water is. When I took this picture, I had to climb out to the middle of the river balancing on some rocks. Then I laid down flat and took the picture! I used my iPhone Xs and didn’t edit the picture. This year, I hope to learn more about taking pictures utilizing long exposure. I also hope to get better at organizing my pictures and keeping...
